Using menthol crystals in aromatherapy
72Ease cold and sinus symptoms with menthol
Many people are aware of the healing properties of essential oils such as Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Rosemary, and Lemon for upper-respiratory problems. But how often do you add a few menthol crystals to your oil burner, or a little menthol dissolved in alcohol in your diffusers?
Menthol is a powerful decongestant, as indicated by the many OTC remedies that contain it. It also stays in the air for some time after you have put out your burner or turned off the diffuser.
During the daytime when alertness is a major factor, I suggest the following recipe (for an oil burner; amounts should be modified if you use another type of diffuser):
- 3 drops Lemon oil
- 3 drops Peppermint oil
- 2 drops Tangerine oil
- 2 drops Rosemary oil
- 2-3 medium,-sized (1/4 - 1/2 inch) menthol crystals (be sure to dissolve these in a little alcohol if adding to a diffuser; no need to make any changes in a burner)
- Enough water to fill the burner/diffuser
This not only helps with decongesting your sinuses, but also helps you remain alert and ready for anything!
In the evening, when relaxation is of greater importance, try this recipe:
- 2 drops Oregano
- 4 drops Lavender
- 4 drops Lemongrass
- 2 drops Roman Chamomile (optional)
- 2-3 medium-sized menthol crystals--see previous recipe for usage
- Water to fill the burner/diffuser
This combination is relaxing, and again, helps to open the sinuses and relieve congestion. Just be sure to extinguish your burner before you go to sleep so that the oil and water do not burn away. The healing properties will remain in the air as you head off to sleep.
With all the colds and flus that are traveling the planet, I felt this would be an appropriate hub. Please feel free to comment, or to provide your own recipes. You can add menthol crystals to almost anything, and they have the added benefit of being both awakening and relaxing, depending on what oils the crystals are combined with.
Good health to all!
